The Therapeutic Use of Music for Social Communication Development of Children with Autism

Abstract
autism. Many researchers have proposed that behavioral phenotype of social communication is operated by the underlying mechanism of input, processing, and output of social information. Based on this operating mechanism, this study demonstrated how the therapeutic use of music plays an integral role in social communication development of children with autism. The literature has documented that music as a mediating stimulus facilitates children with autism to attend to social information input. Furthermore, by offering direct information of the world and a partner¡¯s intention and expectation, music lessens an attenuation of the amount of social information. Music has been substantiated to structure an environment for a social learning to promote processing of the social information. Finally, motivating these children with autism to engage in social interaction and learn social behaviors, music has been effective in eliciting desired social behaviors.
